The risk factor

In one word, minimal, but there have been a handful of cases where complications resulting from laser eye surgery have resulted in corneal transplants. So here goes:

- There is about a 0.1 percent chance of the cornea becoming infected after PRK, which usually means added discomfort and a delay in healing, but no long-term effects within a period of four years

- It is as yet not possible to definitely predict how your eye will respond to laser surgery. As a result, you may still need lenses after surgery for good vision. In some cases, a second procedure can improve the initial result

- Some patients find that their best vision with corrective lenses is worse than it was before the surgery. This is a result of either irregular tissue removal or development of corneal haze

- However, corneal haze is part of the normal healing process after PRK. In most cases, it has little or no effect on the final vision. However, some cases of excessive haze interfere with vision. As with under-correction, this can often be corrected by additional eye laser treatment.

- Some patients experience the halo effect, an optical effect noticed in dim light. As the pupil enlarges, a second faded image is produced by the untreated peripheral cornea. This can interfere with night driving. However, recorded cases are extremely rare.

As of now, a number of other lasers for eye surgery are being tested to determine their safety and efficacy. The human eye is remarkable. It accommodates to changing lighting conditions and focuses light rays originating from various distances from the eye. When all of the components of the eye function properly, light is converted to impulses and conveyed to the brain where an image is perceived.

Light rays enter the eye through a transparent layer of tissue known as the cornea. As the eye's main focusing element, the cornea takes widely diverging rays of light and bends them through the pupil, the dark, round opening in the center of the colored iris.

The lens of the eye is located immediately behind the pupil. The purpose of the lens is to make the delicate adjustments in the path of the light rays in order to bring the light into focus upon the retina, the membrane containing photoreceptor nerve cells that lines the inside back wall of the eye. The photoreceptor nerve cells of the retina change the light rays into electrical impulses and send them through the optic nerve to the brain where an image is perceived.

The individual components of the eye work in a manner similar to a camera. Each part plays a vital role in providing clear vision.

CORNEA - The transparent, outer "window" and primary focusing element of the eye. The outer layer of the cornea is known as epithelium. Its main job is to protect the eye. The epithelium is made up of transparent cells that have the ability to regenerate quickly. The inner layers of the cornea are also made up of transparent tissue, which allows light to pass.

PUPIL - The dark opening in the center of the colored iris that controls how much light enters the eye. The colored iris functions like the iris of a camera, opening and closing, to control the amount of light entering through the pupil.

LENS - The part of the eye immediately behind the iris that performs delicate focusing of light rays upon the retina. In persons under 40, the lens is soft and pliable, allowing for fine focusing from a wide variety of distances. For individuals over 40, the lens begins to become less pliable, making focusing upon objects near to the eye more difficult. This is known as presbyopia.

RETINA - The membrane lining the back of the eye that contains photoreceptor cells. These photoreceptor nerve cells react to the presence and intensity of light by sending an impulse to the brain via the optic nerve. In the brain, the multitude of nerve impulses received from the photoreceptor cells in the retina are assimilated into an image.

INSTRUCTIONS

1.Wear the glasses you normally wear when reading.

2.View the chart at arms distance and cover one eye. With the uncovered eye, stare at the white dot in the center of the grid.

3.To view the chart at the proper distance, slowly move in toward your monitor until one of the two red ovals FIRST disappears.

4.During the entire test, you should have one eye covered, stare at the center of the grid and only see one red oval.

5.If your eye is functioning properly , you should be able to see the center white dot and the four corners and sides of the grid. The lines should appear to be straight and continuous from top to bottom and side to side.

6.Now test your other eye.

	Note: if there are any holes or blurry spots, or if the lines appear to be wavy, fuzzy, crooked, distorted or broken, these are indications of macular degeneration.
